This Weather is Really Chappin' my Hide

I really enjoy the snappiness that a sharp, supple leather jacket lends to an otherwise ordinary pant/shirt base. But, with that being said, you have to get a quality hide that can withstand the sometimes harsh elements of your particular climate. I find that finer leathers, even though they my be more supple, have a density of skin that is a true wind blocker. Couple a fine leather with shearling or a Thinsulate (TM) cloth as liner and you won't be worried by the weather. Fashion meets function and you stay toasty and sharp in the same foggy breath.

Remember names like Schott, Belstaff, Gucci, Shipley & Halmos, John Varvatos, and Harley Davidson.

Fall/Winter weather and the Holiday season brings me to think of Robes, Pajamas and lounging apparel. The season seems to rush in and catch me unaware and unprepared. I love coming home and playing Mr. Rogers by taking off my “work” clothing and slipping into my “nesting” clothing complete with comfortable shoes and soft pants and top. What do you have along those lines? Are you a smoking jacket type of guy or lounge pants and top? Here are a few ideas.

Men, men, I say to unto you, get familiar with the names, Borsalino, Stetson, Resistol, Dobbs, Betmar, Bollman, Kangol, Bailey, and Tilley to name a few. Reintroduce yourself to the polished and finished appearance that a hatted man exudes. Bring back a dash of the flash that was commonplace to a more refined time. It used to be that the choices men had to afford them dry feet were either drab black "overshoes" or clunky lug soled boots. Not any more. Designers are realizing that new stylings are as easy as allowing the rubber to meet the road. As long as the barrier between the feet and the street is waterproof, designer's imaginations have taken over.

Swims have always had the (left) overshoes but have recently added the (right) rubber loafers to their lineup.

Is Snivalry Dead?

As colder weather sets in and sniffles start, I am beginning to gather my handkerchiefs but find that I need to retrieve them from my two favorite girls. And, as I gather the begged and borrowed handkerchiefs from around the house I remember the instances of their departures from my possession. I was reminded of times when a mother needed to dry her eyes at her daughter's graduation or when a baby's nose needed dabbing while on public transit or the time I forgot my pocket square and pressed my handkerchief into service. But I find that the simple but necessary handkerchief has gone underground on the public landscape. I see fewer and fewer men prepared by carrying them.

What has political correctness and hand sanitizer done to the integration of function and fashion? Handkerchiefs, penknives, fountain pens and money clips with cash have been replaced by cell phones, atm cards and handi wipes. It is my opinion that fashion should embellish the necessary items that both men and women should possess in venturing out into society on their daily regimine.

Carrying a handkerchief has been a staple of gentlemanly conduct that was handed down to me from my father and from his father. The minimalist approach to dressing is fine as long as the mandatory mens complement of items are present before walking out the door. I hope to be expressing my views on a few indispensable items every man should possess and carry.

Rodney Dangerfield wanted is Wife gone with a variation of that line, but if I could take the Clothing from this movie, I would be set.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and loved the fashions presented in the movie, “Takers.” The film was both an action and attraction movie somewhat following in the bloodline of my favorite “Bond” genre. I think of Bond being its own class of film but Takers comes close and is a must see.

Speaking of the clothing, Idris Elba, T.I., Michael Ealy showcased Gucci, Versace, all of whom made a strong showing in this movie. Paul Walker and Hayden Christensen, modeled a few Dolce Gabbana pieces and, John Varvatos had the perfect mannequin in the personage of Chris Brown.

One very elegant scene had Elba in the lead with a form fitting white Gucci peaked lapelled jacket and black undertow. The movie actually had me fantasizing about a couple of the pieces. This is one runway show I may have to see again.

Gene Hiller's Brings Back Memories

I guess you have wondered where I've been and the quick answer is that I have experienced another forced sabbatical. Shopping has been a part of the time off, but it’s been for lamps, bedding and other sundries for my daughter's big college move. During this time, we have also revisited people, places and things that have formed her younger memories and adventures. Undoubtedly, it involved Clothing and Shopping being that she is MY daughter.

Todays revisit involved going to Sausalito and visiting Gene Hiller's Menswear. This was a blast from the long ago past. I am back people with the wardrobe picks for a great fashionable football season. The items I am focusing on can be adapted to both home/big screen or stadium/big screen venues.
As I see it, you need to have an item of clothing that shows you support a team without suggesting you are a billboard for said team. Hats, tee shirts, hoodies and jackets fit the first category whereas Foam Cheese Blocks and KISS make up fit the second.

Scarves are an essential item in some countries and customs. They are used as decoration or a functional accessory to the uniform they accompany. It is my intent to keep you up to date from your top to bottom and lets call this is a "bottom" post.
Them doggies need a comfortable and attractive covering to keep em movin' and I think the designers have come up with some great looks to put on our feet for these summer months. "Toms," in particular have made their way to the forefront via an altruistic marketing plan. "One for One" With every pair we purchase Toms gives a pair to a child in need. Indeed! We can do our part and look pretty stylish as well.
In my view, Toms are the new Espadrilles. Many designers have offerings for this style of footwear.

A Little Sweet Tee?

Nothing like a little sweet tee to keep you cool and collected.

I should've told you I'd be gone for a moment to the South but it came upon me suddenly and I had no time to alert everyone of my trip. As always, the issue when you are going away is, "what to pack?" The country is experiencing so many small microclimates that you must have layers to accommodate the differences.
Today I would like to consider the tee as both casual and dressier piece to accentuate a day to night outfit. I find this relevant, because I found the greatest tee shirt and cotton vee neck sweater combo at the recent Saks sale.
Tees are an easy item to through on when the right collared shirt is not in your wardrobe or at the cleaners. But, having the right tee that will go from brunch to dinner with equal aplomb, can be a chore to find. Style-wise, tees can be Henley, Crew, or Vee Neck and will come in many different fabrics. I tend to stay simple with a crew neck but also note the crew neck can be high or have a lower scoop to the collar bone. My favorite is cotton or cotton/silk blend. The sheen and color of the material is what separates the rich from the chaff when I am choosing that perfect tee. Brioni, Kiton, Polo, Dries Van Noten, Brunello Cucinelli and Lacoste all make fashion tees. Look for great vibrant colors and choice fabric and you will never go wrong.

Open, Open, Open

While impatiently awaiting the Barney's Warehouse Sale doors to open (or any sale doors for that matter) my mind reflects back on that commercial where a women is peering through the plane glass of a store chanting the words above.

I have been so distracted with my day job and child that I have been somewhat catatonic with thoughts colliding into each other inside my head. But I wouldn't be me without a good deal of those thoughts being related to my appearance and next purchase. With my blog thought and personal needs at issue I have been pondering what is a building block item that I need? What would be most versatile and what would get the most wear? For me the big 3 are pants, shirts, and sweaters. But this time around, Sweaters seem to stick in my mind.

So, what kind of sweater...heavy, light, cotton, wool, blend, zips, buttons, v neck, crew, cardigan...oh my?! All sections of the country have their own micro-climate and one should choose accordingly. Style must always be a consideration but that’s where I find the general knitwear scene to be lacking.

Personally speaking, I believe sweaters have not been up to par over the past 10 years. Coogi became crass, Missioni became common place, and for a while no one had really stepped up to carry the banner. IMHO the current sweaters are Italian or British or Scottish. Names that come to mind are Avon Celli, Borrelli, Brunello Cucinelli, Malo, Loro Piana, Bamford, and Pringle.

What Would Bond Wear?

You know...Bond...James Bond. I don't know how many of you have viewed my profile but if you do, you will see that I like almost all things "Bond." I genuinely love the clothing Bond wears in his movies. This new Bond is outfitted in smart and sharp ensembles that fit both his physique and his various sorroundings. I also like the way he is not dusted off and re-clothed in each scene. He is more like the rest of us who have to fight and dine in the same outfit. Often times, I find that I ask myself, "What would Bond wear?" on a particular occassion. Being that it is Summer, I was able to take tips from his last movie, "Quantum of Solace." Particularly, his attire in this movie allowed me to lose my fear of wearing black or dark colors in the heat of the Summer. I also, learned that one can couple a cableknit with light tee shirt between Memorial and Labor Days.

Of particular note, with the new Bond is his use of simple but elegant clothing pieces which should form a basis for anyone's wardrobe. The Polo, The Tee, and Cableknit Cardigan are indespensible items that if kept plain and simple can be interchanged to create numerous combinations.

My suggestions are: Sunspel polos and tees, and "pick your own" label cardigan. Ralph Lauren, Vince, Bennetton, and Brooks Brothers make nice shawl collared cardigans and are good starts.

Staying in the Hunt

In the heat of the summer, many are asking themselves the question “what do I wear in this heat?” Simplistically, the heat should dictate that less is more and therefore this wondering becomes somewhat of a situational oxymoron. But, hey, don’t sweat it; I’ve got you covered.

What do people who live in some of the hottest and most intense tropical climates wear? They wear Safari Jackets, hats and weightless coverings to keep themselves cool and comfortable. Without dating myself, I remember Mill Valley excursions with my dad and a special store that had a curious feel like it could have been in Disneyland. Still guessing? It was the early days of Banana Republic and Safari gear was the mainstay. Today, we see many mutations of the traditional Safari Jacket. Here are a few variations, but the most traditional Safari Jacket will have a belt and vented back slits to facilitate the flow of air and release of body heat.

Summer White

White pants are being used as a primary color block this summer. In her recent movie, Anna Wintour demanded that she see primary colors in the color block series of photos for her "September Issue." White has been used as a separation between other bright primary colors but this summer "White" is a major player. The Sartorialist recently ran a series of pictures on this very idea.

The pant is the main source of the white color block but if you are a real fashionista you might have a totally awesome double breasted jacket to give your outfit its proper splash of white.

White is a color, which can work to clean the palette; similar to the effect coffee has on the olfactory senses when sampling fragrances. White can be the socks that set off the green Tods loafers. White can be the tee shirt that sets off the blue Chambray shirt or red unconstructed Brioni Sportcoat.

The Suede boot...who woulda thunk? This mod throwback is enjoying a resurgence like no other footwear right now. Many makers/designers are entering the fray with their own signature version of this dashing dandy. As I was pursuing the internet for photos to share, I found it curious that many of the designers were focusing on the remakes of the desert boot style while there were few replicas of my personal favorite, the suede Chelsea or Jodhpur. Personally, I have a pair of rubber soled brown suede Ferragamos from 2003. My boots have a square toe rather than the rounded toe pictured below.

Shirting the Issue of a Good Stiff One

Sorry for my little tirade last post but my periods between retail therapy sessions have become longer, with the eventual session being weak at best.
But, back to the issue at hand...I want a shirt and not any shirt will do. I have always been partial to the high rise stiffness of a substantial collar.

And, when I say "shirt," I envision a statement of collar superiortity that would demand a substantial tie be worn as complement, or could turn heads if left unadorned. I could never clearly verbalize my intent or vision of the perfect collar until Tom Ford personified my thoughts by coming from behind the camera to the forefront.

Tom Ford's image, gave me the look that I wanted and still use as the standard upon which all my shirting selections are judged. However, the issue for me still remains that I must obtain the biggest bang for my meager bucks. I desire to have the best shirt I can purchase at the best price point, before the "uh oh I splurged too much" cutoff. So, after looking and wearing and washing and fabric selections and custom or no custom and working out (yes I do work out to fit an item) and changing sizes, I have come to a neat little number that does me just right. These shirts are trim on my body giving me the room to move without restricting my arms or chest area and they also tuck nicely into my trousers without that Trad Shirt blousing effect. Lastly, they have what I call "neck appeal." The look of the collar is prominent. The collar will not shirk away from a jacket or swearter and will be the perfect receptor to a high end 7-fold tie. This collar speaks to me.

There is simply no substitute for a good stiff one!

What I Don't Like

I have been somewhat challenged as it pertains to my disposable clothing allowance. It has almost been nonexistent to say the least but today I took a walk to find a really nice white shirt for cheap…that's when I got mad. Without naming names, I perused the wares of a couple of stores known for their drastically reduced, second hand and almost second hand offerings. They consistently advertise $1100.00 dresses for $375.00 and $2300.00 suits for $800.00 but they were nowhere to be found. As a matter of fact they had lesser items for higher prices. The shirts they had on hand were well over a hundred dollars. The tattered and shop worn trousers they offered couldn’t beat Neiman’s last call.

What I don't like, are discount houses trying to sell second hand or distressed merchandise for last markdown, or HIGHER prices, simply because they have a coerced market. People flock to these places mesmerized by the Brioni, DG, and Prada labels and come to believe via some brainwashing of ignorance, that they are getting the lowest price on good designer products. Au contraire, mon amie, there are bargains to be had but not here. I admit to being a label jockey but not without the vast amount of research and price conscience acumen that precedes the final act of handing over the moolah.

Don’t get me wrong…yes I am mad because I didn’t make a purchase…yes I am mad because their selection had little in the way of white…yes I am mad that Gilt just had the same ETON shirts on sale at $99.00 and these cheese whizzers were hawking them out for $129.00…yes I am mad because they had a long line of people still purchasing at these ridiculous prices and lastly I am mad because I know there is a place where Borrellis, Brionis, Zegnas, Charvets, Truzzis, Barbas, and Finamores can be purchased in the $70.00 to $110.00 range…and I haven’t found it yet!

Wardrobe Stapels

Regardless of how many Suits, Jackets, Pants, Shirts, Shoes I accumulate, I always find myself in the hunt for a basic clothing item upon which to mix, match and accessorize Ad infinitum. Blue Blazers are just that sort of staple that provide the wearer with an infinite well of imaginative juices to flow in both dress and casual directions. I recently missed two instances to snag the "to die for" Blazer, one from eHaberdasher and the other from eBay. Both were blue, of course, and had the essential gilt buttons and peaked lapels. One was made by Brioni and the other by Brooks Brothers. Blue Blazers have been a mainstay of the English influence and that influence has been prevalent in my wardrobe for quite some time. Please give some thought to the traditional or some of the newer takes on this must have staple for your wardrobe.

Gamble on a New Razor

Gillett has further refined and replaned its money making Fusion 5 blade system to introduce the "Fusion ProGlide." By adding an oil slick strip and thinning the razors, Proctor and his buddy Gamble have retooled their new found acquisition's prime product to introduce what is the smoothest shave I can imagine.

They have come a long way from their humble safety razor beginnings but major developments kept happening and shaving has never looked back. Safety went out the window, Mach 3 sped things up and Fusion threw us into a "Matrix" like dimension. Competitors cannot keep up and have embraced the old to compete with the new. If you look closely and survey the situation, you will see re-tooled safety razors and throw back barber supplies being marketed with gold, platinum and ebony handles. For me, the old stuff is grand but I just don't have that kind of time in the morning. Anything that can knock down the growth without making me look like I was in a brawl, is the regime I can live with.

So, get up get out and get involved...it's your beard and your face!

Layer Right..Start Tight

Please forgive me for jumping around with my focus. I resumed my posting ways by adopting the idea that I would start at the body and work my way outward. Let's just say this post focuses closer to the body than not.

Undershirts, briefs, boxers, which ones do you wear? Yes, you should wear underwear always, IMHO. Personally, I like to sense that my clothing looks like it feels and feels like it looks. So, starting with loose, clumsy, underwear sets the stage for a very uncomfortable and disheveled appearance. As goes my appearance, so goes my day.
There is a currently running Hanes commercial that pokes fun at a gent’s loosely fitting t-shirt collar. I would go a few steps further with wondering if the undershirt is too long, too short, bunches at the waist, do the briefs bind or boxers ride up, do they make impressions on the lay of the pant? All are important issues for feeling and thereby looking your best.
For me, I lean toward a V neck shirt and trunk with "push up" effect offered by Ermenegildo Zegna. I like the way the material and make fits snugly to my body and stays where its put. The underwear never fights with my extra slim fit shirt or my low waisted 9.25 inch rise trousers. There are many makers leaning toward this fit; Armani, Versace and Hanro to name a few. Just take this as a suggestion...kinda like I suggest you pull the ripcord to your parachute! Ciao.

A Suitable Loafer

I recently made a comment on "the Sartorialist" expressing the notion, that I find it against my sensibilities to go sock-less in a lace up Oxford or Cap Toe shoe and I feel only a loafer should be pressed into service on such an occasion.
That comment spurned me on to search for what I thought was the most elegant but adaptable loafer that could carry itself nobly if its wearer were to go bare. Not so Common Scents

Time to get back to the body focus. With Summer upon us, and layers being peeled away, we need to enhance the attractiveness and allure of our last and primary layer...skin.

Summer scents are advertised as being "clean" or "fresh" but rarely ever deliver. I find they maintain a citrus or soapy undertone and lack any real come hither effect. But, dash that thought as Acqua di Parma Meditediterraneo line has got it right, namely with their Bergamotto entry. This number is fresh, light and oh so sexy. Do yourself a favor and sample some today...there is only so much Summer left.

Papa's Gotta GET a Brand New Bag

I pulled out my summer "go to work" bag I bought a few summers ago. It is a decent J. Crew model with conservative green and blue horizontal bands and leather finished handles. It is of the heavy canvas variety and zips across the top. I like it and enjoy carrying it but the new wave seems to be the "waxed cloth" look.

Makers/Brands of this old but new craze are Filson, Barbour, J Crew, Oughton, L.L. Bean and many others. I really need to upgrade to this lighter and versatile fabric that has been around for decades. Here are a few good looks:

Before the Graduation festivities I scoured the Websphere for any images of "proud poppa" outfits seen at Graduations. I found very little, so, for those who come after me I suggest these combos for Award Ceremony, Church Service, Graduation Day and Dinner Nights.

Obama Ousts McChrystal in Presidential Uniform

Obama is looking very militaristic and unimagined as he tightens the reins on errant comments and deviant behavior from the troops. His dimpled tie seems to have been fashioned by a "tie machine" and his suit shoulders are ever so appropriately padded.

No soft shouldered, unconstructed jacket or whimsical collar treatment for this man; not on this day. His dress and mannerism say that I am in charge, contained, and to the point. There will be no room for "play" today. A-ten-hut!

"The Last Emperor" Personal Style

Please take a moment and and view this movie if you haven't already. I, at first, thought "what more can I learn about a subject which consumes me?"... a lot, as I quickly found out.

What I took away from this movie was that all designers create visions for others but also have a vision for themselves. Valentino's personal style was impeccable! Watch closely his personal, private, casual moments in this film and take in his attire. He was innovative; and self assured. In one scene he was layering three shirts effortlessly with applomb. I feel like the young writer who would dare to cook a recipe from Julia Child's volume each day.

Oh, what I wouldn't give to carry myself like Valentino, daily. Thank you "Rowthree.com" for carrying the casual photo of the Emperor at top.

Diddy Got To the Greek In Style

Diddy is looking ever so Pitti (Uomo) in his monochromatic brown combination as a high powered record mogul in “Get Him to the Greek.”
Checked out the movie last weekend and as always, I'm looking at the acting, the plot, etc., but more importantly, the clothes. I have always studied and paid close attention to the clothing details in movies...remember I am a James Bond fan. I love the lesser wrinkling of cotton/linen blends; which I believe this is. Please feel free to educate me if this is not the fabric. On the subject of monochromatic dressing; I would say I am a fan of staying in a color “range” but using different textures and hues to make the combination interesting. See you at the Movies!

Who's the Boss?

Ok, so I know I said I would start with personal grooming products but I can't help it...clothes comsume most of my thought process when I am not concentrating on work or finances.

So what's up with Boss? Hugo Boss. I feel like there is a full court press. New website for purchasing, 5 lines of clothing, becoming Nordstrom's go to brand...I mean are you aware???

You have a German company, founded in 1923, by its namesake, with a fabric maker (Marzoto) as a major player. Until the end of 2009, Ohio was the manufacturing hub for American production but couldn't keep up, so they closed it. Now everywhere you turn you see "Hugo Boss." Hugo was the man in the 70's along with Pierre Cardin and YSL but things change...and then they return!

Okay they have my attention!

Book Review: "Unbillable Hours"

What is there to say that hasn’t been said in this book?

The book is a Movie. I saw, felt and smelled the legal documents, the prison and the atmosphere this book so tersely brought to the forefront. Great read!

To the point and on point writing. Both the Author’s experience and Mario’s journey is brilliantly and economically laid out in no uncertain terms. This same read would have been a 400-500 page book by other authors. Who needs a big book?

This guy is good…I mean real good.

And he seems to have an incredible sense of style.

The Morning Ritual

I stated in my earlier post that I was a mug and brush man. I have maintained this ritual for more than 10 years. I am starting to rethink this process. Can there be another way? Is there another path to the perfect shave? Can the traditional be too staid? Well, I am about to step out on a limb. I have mounted a mirror in my shower and bought a tube of Jack Black Beard Lube. I am taking this new course of action to streamline my morning activities and take advantage of the moisture boost from shower shaving. Wish me luck, changing a major activity of the morning will take some doing.

Starting Over

After being gone for a while I have regained my interest and enthusiasm for Blogging. Since I am all about looking good or at the least, looking the best I can...I thought of opening back up with my basic rule of thumb: "Start at the beginning" The beginning is, the body. The body is about Grooming. Hair, Skin, Shaving, Fragrance and Grooming Tools will be the first topics of intense scrutiny and comment.

There are instances where I believe the integrity and allure of an item is enhanced by seeing detailed hand stitching. Quilts, button-holes, men's lapels and this bloomer are great examples of this. Excellent job! I believe everything will be going towards intended transparency. We will want to see that we are getting our value in clothing.

Very nice. She has a clean, polished no fuss look for a sunny day. She looks "smartly" dressed. Hair has flair but not in face. Earrings are sexy without interfering. High waist skirt accentuates the positive. Nicely done.

In these economic times, I find a need to begin anew with crafting my wardrobe. This time no unnecessary items and no overpriced pieces that I will never wear. I think about the cornerstone items that will support me in any direction I take. I use the “Start closest to the skin rule.” We will always be wearing our skin, so why not focus on grooming, underwear and socks (pajamas and robes included). Looking the Part

I am a little shy about asking someone to let me take their picture. So you may simply see the object of my inspection rather than the person's face. I spied these interesting boots/stockings/pants, on a woman who was bicycling to a gig. She had her instrument and was totally looking the part. Her outfit was not costume but cleverly correct for the assumed occasion.

I left a comment on this photo from "The Sartorialist." I thought that whereas I used clothing and fashion to become extroverted in my expression of self some clothe themselves for a duality of purpose. Here is a man who is reported to be homeless but still has the presence of mind and self to put himself forward not being "out of the running." He dresses both for the elements outside of himself and for the expression of himself. Right on man!

Have you noticed that the Recession has lead fashion to a more conservative slant? I notice that fabrics and colors are getting back to basics. I see brown, gray, blue, and gold being the mainstays for the upcoming fall season and wool being the go to fabric. Cashmere has become so bastardized and undiscernable that unless you can buy the 200.00 a yard stuff, why bother when high grade wool can be just as soft. I am using this time to stop buying whimsical stuff and take an approach to restarting my wardrobe with staples. White shirts, gray wool slacks, blue blazer, black shoes...etc.
